Conviction of Sibu Soren

Recent conviction of Sibu Soren is a welcome judgment! The stand of Supreme Court is highly appreciable. Its the decisions like this which reinforce our belief in Our Judicial System.

Though I would not comment on whether he was guilty or not ( Better people have reached their verdict). But I would come forward and say that in general, the Indian Politicians believe that they are lawmakers and that makes them above law. According to them, the law which governs the citizens doesn't apply to them. They forget that they are still under the limits of the constitution. Someone, please remind them!

Several incidents have happened in the past which have shaken our trust in the system. People in power, especially politicians, go unscathed after doing a crime. Sometimes the police does a shabby job of collecting evidence and many times the witnesses turn hostile because of their power. They have such an ego and pride of power that when someone questions their decisions, they remove it from their way. Many times when Supreme Court tried to declare their policies as unconstitutional, they have gone ahead and amended the constitution to accommodate their selfish purpose. Mulayam Singh amended a law to make cheating not a crime, now students can cheat through their exams! They have made it necessary to seek permission before phone tapping and sting operations. Because these activities were revealing their dirty acts, they have made it helpless. Police, Judiciary and even Media is helpless before them and they keep crushing law under their foot.

This judgment is noteworthy as it proves that their powers are not absolute and that they can be punished if they take the law in their hands. It is worth contemplating that how such people get elected to such high ranks and even after exploiting people for 5 years, they again get elected. There has to be some institution which can monitor their activities and put a limit to their powers, and moreover, check any misuse of their powers.
